pretty women

The girl on the left was also in an earlier photo but I loved the whole "Pretty Woman" twins project going on. The thigh high stockings are a cheaper alternative to the boots that were all over the runways for fall 2009. It will be interesting to see if they're still around at the upcoming fall 2010 runway shows. 2010! Crazy! But I am more than ready for a new year.

Oyster Stick Furniture - Yes or No?

Oyster sticks - used to cultivate farm raised oysters are now showing up recyled into furniture and accessories. I first noticed oyster stick furniture in this restful living room designed by Erin Martin and featured in House Beautiful (photography by Luca Trovato)
Yesterday, the new Wisteria catalog came (full of great, new stuff) and they're offering an Oyster Stick Mirror ($249) and Oyster Stick Lamp ($399).

BoBo Intriguing Objects also offers a lamp, chandelier and mirror (and possible more).
So here's my question - Do You Like The Look of Oyster Stick? On the one hand, it's very eco-friendly but every time I look at it, it makes me think of pock marks. Is it just me or do you like the look...?

Photographer Rachel Whiting

Getting all ready for New Year's celebrations? Can you believe this year is nearly over? I can't, you can't, nobody can! Well maybe just the little ones can. I remember when I thought the year 2000 would never come and we used to say something like: yeah, you'll manage to do that when pigs fly or in 2000, as if this would never come. Here in Argentina when we think something will never happen we say it will "en el año verde" (the green year) which of course does not exist. My goodness who invented that!

As you may have noticed I'm posting every other day instead of every day. I'm on holidays and I seem to have so much more to do than when I'm at home. Anyway, today I'd like you to meet London based freelance photographer Rachel Whiting who specializes in interiors and still-life. Her work has been featured in Country Living, Homes & Antiques and Country Style.
I love the simplicity of her images. She manages to balance and combine shapes and colours to create these enchanting photographs.

Come agree, or disagree with me!

The Benefits of a Minimalist Home

I could probably go on for a while about this, but let me just list a few key benefits of Interior Minimalist: (1). Less stressful. Clutter is a form of visual distraction, and everything in our vision pulls at our attention at least a little. The less clutter, the less visual stress we have. A minimalist home is calming. (2). More appealing. Think about photos of homes that are cluttered, and photos of minimalist homes. The ones with almost nothing in them except some beautiful furniture, some nice artwork, and a very few pretty decorations, are the ones that appeal to most of us. You can make your home more appealing by making it more minimalist. (3). Easier to clean. It’s hard to clean a whole bunch of objects, or to sweep or vacuum around a bunch of furniture. The more stuff you have, the more you have to keep clean, and the more complicated it is to clean around the stuff. Think about how easy it is to clean an empty room compared to one with 50 objects in it. That’s an extreme example, of course, as I wouldn’t recommend you have an empty room, but it’s just to illustrate the difference.

I’m flattered!

I’ve never participated in The Homies Awards that is put on by Apartment Therapy every year, but this year as I was looking through the contenders and lo and behold I came across my blog (way down on the list :)…) .  Thank you SaraLeeAB and Visual Vamp!  I love you guys!

So, basically the award is to nominate the best in the Home Design arena.

There is only one more day to vote, but if you’d like to vote for Harmony and Home in The Homies Awards, go to this link and give me a little link love!

Thank you, Thank you, Thank you!!!

I hope you are all having a wonderful holiday.  Any great plans for New Years Eve?

Holiday Organizing Ideas: Storing Ornaments Safely

Holiday clean-up is a chore many of us dread and can't ignore. Packing and storing Christmas tree ornaments is a project that takes some planning and time. There are several storage options to help you pack away ornaments neatly and safely until next year.

Up for doing-it-yourself? Martha Stewart uses corrugated cardboard, paper cups and egg cartons to covert a standard plastic storage bin into a container perfect for housing our most fragile ornaments.

Who said storage can't be stylish? The beautifully patterned jacquard fabric of the Jubilee Ornament Storage Chests makes them easy to spot when it comes time to trim the tree.

This space-saving holiday storage box consists of three stackable trays with adjustable dividers to accommodate as many as 48 ornaments. I like that the clear body of this Christmas storage box allows you view the contents easily.

These Archival Ornament Storage Boxes provide secure storage and protect your holiday treasures from damage due to ultraviolet light and migrant acid.

Now that you have organized your Christmas ornaments, are you still buried in ribbons and gift wrap? If you need ideas on storing holiday gift wrap, go here. For more DIY ideas, go here.

Happy holidays, happy organizing!

Okay so the first thing you notice is the height differential. But then...her jeans. These look authentically retro in all their skinny high-waisted glory.
